If you’ve ever experienced a sharp, burning, or electric pain that shoots from your lower back down through your buttock and into your leg, you may have sciatica. It’s one of the most recognizable and debilitating pain patterns we see in our Lethbridge chiropractic clinic — and it’s also one of the conditions that responds very well to chiropractic care.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica isn’t a diagnosis on its own — it’s a term that describes pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, running from the lower lumbar spine through the pelvis and down the back of each leg. When this nerve becomes compressed or inflamed, it sends pain signals along its entire length.
The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated or bulging disc in the lower lumbar spine (typically L4-L5 or L5-S1), which puts pressure on the nerve root. Muscle spasm, spinal stenosis, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction can also mimic or contribute to sciatic symptoms.
Sciatica and Lethbridge’s Workforce
We see a particularly high incidence of sciatica in Lethbridge patients who perform physically demanding work. Agricultural workers, construction workers, warehouse employees, and those in the trades face repeated spinal loading that can accelerate disc degeneration and increase sciatic nerve irritation. Long hours in tractors, forklifts, or delivery vehicles also contribute, as vibration and prolonged sitting are well-known sciatica triggers.
Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica
Chiropractic care addresses sciatica by targeting the mechanical cause of the nerve compression. Treatment typically involves:
- Lumbar spinal adjustments to create space in the spinal joints and reduce disc pressure on the nerve
- Pelvic and sacroiliac joint adjustments when the SI joint is contributing to nerve irritation
- Soft-tissue therapy to release the piriformis muscle, which can compress the sciatic nerve as it passes through the pelvis
- Home exercise guidance including nerve flossing techniques and core stability exercises to reduce recurrence
How Long Does Sciatica Treatment Take?
Most patients with acute sciatica begin to experience meaningful relief within 4-8 chiropractic visits. Chronic cases — where sciatic symptoms have been present for months — may require a longer care plan. The earlier you seek treatment, the better your outcomes typically are.
